Twice a year 3rd – 6th graders participate in MAP Assessments. This year’s spring session is scheduled to begin after April break. Parents will receive a letter explaining what MAP is and a schedule later this week.

Elementary students are encouraged to dress up like a favorite book character for our annual Book Character Day on Thursday, March 30.  Parents are welcome to come watch our Book Character Parade that will begin at 8:15.  Students will be parading from the elementary office area, in front of the Admin. Building and then continue on through the courtyard of the Secondary Building.  Parents please position yourself along the paved area in front of the Admin. Building for the best parade viewing experience.  Students that choose not to dress up will be able to participate in the parade as well.

Annual Belonging Climate Survey⼁ds.office@gisthailand.org
On March 27, we will send out the Annual Belonging Climate Survey once again to the entire community. This will include all of the Secondary Students, Grade 6 Students, All Staff (Thai and Non-Thai), Parents, and Alumni. The goal is to use this survey to gather data regarding belonging within the community.

We want to see if there have been any changes in either direction since last year. We also want to determine if there are areas that we can continue to improve or provide interventions within.

We hope to conduct this survey every year to get a snapshot of the belonging health of the GIS community and use this data along with small groups and forums to continue working towards a thriving community that truly represents the two great commandments in Matthew 22:37-39. ‘Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. ‘

The vaccination Clinic is happening on March 21st  in the Nurse’s office.  If you have signed up please reminder to come by between 3.15-4.00pm.  Elementary student will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Honors Chanson auditions | shong@gisthailand.org
Chanson is GIS’s select vocal ensemble of approximately 14-18 singers, selected through audition. In alternate years, Chanson participates in either the International Choral Festival (BICF) at ISB in the fall, or at the ACSC choir festival in March. Auditions are open to students currently in grades 8-11 and who also enroll in choir or band for ’23-24. Auditions will be individually scheduled with Mrs.Hong. The deadline to sign up is March 24. • Outside guests must be between ages 15-18.

GIS Faith & Sexuality Assembly Series — Gender & Identity: March 23-24 | spirituallife@gisthailand.org

In our 21st Century world, it’s readily apparent that culture translation, accompanied by clear biblical teaching are essential skills necessary for equipping our students to be confident in how their faith interacts with the world around them. Our Spiritual Life Office team is preparing a series of 3 gatherings on March 23-24 to equip our grade 7-12 students to develop critical thinking skills, while being invited into an historic Christian worldview about the topics of gender and identity. 

• We want to help equip our parent community with great resources to empower us to have great conversations with our students about these issues. 
  • The Spiritual Life Office will send out a list of questions for families to discuss at home with your students after they participate in our assemblies so stay tuned for links next week!
  • Get your seat license to Christian Sexuality Video Series…
    • We have purchased licenses to an excellent video series called Christian Sexuality that we would like to make available to any GIS G5-12 family. We will show one segment of this series during our assemblies, although it has many more hours of excellent content as part of the series. If you’d like to volunteer at GIS, we have a place for you! 
Our current needs are

• School Aides at the Library:  1-2 Librarian School Aides (Or Student intern) to help at the library. Skills: English, Basic computer. Please contact the HR Office (School Aide Coordinator) if you’d like more information.
• School Aides at the Science Department:  To help us with our inventory process. We still have quite a bit to do to be finished with the inventory process, so we will gladly take as many aides as are available until the inventory process is complete. The aides just need to be able to count and use an already-made spreadsheet. The aides could come any day of the week during the school day and science teachers will be available to answer questions.

March is Reading Month at GIS, a month in which we celebrate reading all types of books. Our theme this year is “Books ARRR a Treasure”.  Reading challenges and fun activities to encourage reading will continue throughout the month.  Special dates include:

• March 14th-16th Elementary Book Swap (during morning recesses)
• March 30th  Book Character Parade *Details below

*The Book Swap begins Tuesday March 14th and runs through Thursday the 16th during recess time. Each student may bring up to  5 “good condition” children’s books to swap each day.

• If you plan on attending the Parents’ Meeting from 7 – 8:30 PM, please RSVP here!
  • The meeting will show some of the content we will present to students, along with a chance for parents to ask any questions they might have for the Spiritual Life Office. 
  • We will be sharing the summary documents of the material to be presented to students, with translations in Korean and Thai via email before the parents’ gathering.

The air quality in Chiang Mai has been very poor this week. Grace International School has an air quality monitor on campus, you can view the reading on the Portal . You can view the chart used at GIS AQI chart.  A reminder for parents to send a mask and an inhaler for students who have asthma or allergy to the pollution.

In our 21st Century world, it’s readily apparent that culture translation, accompanied by clear biblical teaching are essential skills necessary for equipping our students to be confident in how their faith interacts with the world around them. Our Spiritual Life Office team is preparing a series of 3 gatherings on March 23-24 to equip our grade 7-12 students to develop critical thinking skills, while being invited into an historic Christian worldview about the topics of gender and identity. 

• We will have a Parents’ Mtg. on Tuesday, March 14 at The Well International in Worldclubland (map link here). This meeting is designed to give parents an opportunity to interact with our SLO team (Jeff Kamphausen, Madde Mauck and Ryan Timlin) as we get ready to present to the GIS Secondary School. 
• If you plan on attending the Parents’ Meeting from 7:00-8:30pm, please RSVP here!
  • The meeting will show some of the content we will present to students, along with a chance for parents to ask any questions they might have for the Spiritual Life Office.

Songthaew Family Parents, we need your partnership to keep our drop-off and pick routine safe and orderly. There have recently been a few instances of students running and chasing each other in the songtaew sidewalk area while waiting for their songtaews immediately after school. In addition, when the songtaew leader tells the students to “Go, Go, Go,” some students continue to talk, and they are not getting into their songtaews, which delays the students’ departure.  We are requesting that you remind your children to respect other students and the songtaews drivers, ensuring that all students can get home safely and on time.

As Lent begins with Ash Wednesday this Wednesday, Feb. 22, G7-12 students and staff will have the opportunity to receive a cross in ash on their foreheads at the beginning of school or during our worship night if they choose, given by student leaders of our Chapel Core Team. This beautiful, ancient Christian tradition symbolizes our need for Jesus’ forgiveness and the hopeful power of Jesus to restore us to life through his death on the cross as we begin the season of Lent.

Hi GIS parents. We are excited to share that because of your support in dropping students off later, and our staff’s willingness to open campus a bit earlier, we are achieving the goal of reducing the large number of students who are standing outside the gate at the beginning of the school day. During this time, students will spend the afternoon with their buddies who reside at the orphanage as they partake in fellowship, song & dance, games, and other group activities. TBD is a great opportunity for our students to demonstrate the love of Christ by offering their consistent presence in the lives of these children. On Saturday, February 25th we will be taking our NBE team to the Night Bazaar market. This will be our first visit in which we will meet tourists and practice sharing the Gospel. Over this last semester, 2 parent ambassadors held a Belonging focus group on the topic of General Belonging. A focus group was conducted at Kwan’s Kitchen with about 10 parents attending. Parent ambassadors Sunghea Yum and Jonathan Broyles helped lead the discussion and this document is a summary of the insight from this meeting. The document includes topics that were discussed, suggestions that were shared, and a general summary of what some of the parents felt about belonging at Grace International School. We are grateful to the parents that joined this discussion. All of the suggestions have been shared with leadership and for the next round of discussion we would like to focus on equity and status. Every year, we schedule a worship night on Ash Wednesday, the annual beginning of the season of Lent at Grace International School. Any student in Chiangmai from grade 7-12 is welcome, as are parents, but no students below grade 7 are allowed to attend. 

Considering Lent as a discipleship tool (begins Feb. 22 through April 6, 2023)
During the 40 day season of Lent, we consider the consequences of our sin separating us from God as well as the wonder of hope we have in Christ’s gracious forgiveness to all who come to him. The Spiritual Life Office, along with our Chapel Core Team students, will invite our GIS secondary students and their families to consider what we can subtract or add on in order to grow in our knowledge and love for Jesus. Bake Sale is a GIS Community Fundraiser to support students and school projects.
Our host bakers for this month are G2 and G11 (making donations of 25 pieces or more, individually wrapped baked items per student). Parents/guardians of a student in any of these grades, please look forward to emails and updates.

Come buy yummy home-made Bagels, Granola bars, Gluten free snacks, Nut-free items, Cupcakes, Muffins, Brownies, Cookies, Doughnuts, Carrot cake, Banana bread, Popcorn pops, etc. and other surprise desserts.

ELEMENTARY

With cool season upon us we have noticed all sorts of outerwear being worn to school.  Please remember that all sweaters, jackets, sweatshirts, etc., need to be a solid navy blue with no other color, pattern, or logo.  Navy blue or khaki is the only approved color for uniform shorts, pants, skirts.  You can find a more detailed description of our dress code policy in the elementary PSMO or on the Tiger Shop webpage.

Please label all items that come to school (snack containers and jackets in particular) so they don’t end up as lost items. A few items have found their way home from our Lost & Found.  We appreciate your help with that.

This month’s Tiger Pride Day is Monday, January 23.  On that day we will be celebrating Chinese New Year and Korean New Year’s Day. Students are encouraged to wear red or traditional Chinese or Korean clothing on that day.  If your child chooses not to participate according to the Tiger Pride theme, they should wear their normal Grace uniform.

GENERAL

Yard Sale – Saturday 14th January 2023
The vendor spaces for our 2023 Yard Sale are now fully booked. If you would like to donate second-hand stuff to be sold at the event, our Thai PSC is happy to take and sell them in the Thai PSC booth. The money will be donated toward the Middle School building project. You can drop off your good condition stuff on Friday 13th January 2023 between 7:45 – 8:15 a.m. and 3:00 – 3:30 p.m. at the small gate going into the soccer field by the motorbike parking.

Community Carnival |  COO.Office@gisthailand.org
The GIS Community Carnival will be held on 28 January from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm on the school campus. This will be a time for children to play exciting games and for the whole family to socialize and eat some yummy food. The Carnival this year has a beach theme, and we encourage everyone to dress like they are going for a day at the beach. The entrance fee will be 50 baht per person, and each game ticket will cost 20 baht. All proceeds will benefit our amazing Secondary students to help pay for class activities.

• Student Physical Examination Form within 3 months of the examination date. Student Physical Exams Form.
• The TB skin test or QFT is required every 3 years. TB skin test result form.

You will receive an email reminder if your children are due for TB testing this year.

• If your children have life-threatening allergies, Asthma, or other Health accommodation needs.

The vaccination clinic will be held in the nurse’s office on Tuesday, 24 January 2023 from 3:15-4 pm. 
Use this link to sign up and pay no later than the Friday before the clinic date. Elementary students will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

To help prevent the spread of disease, please keep sick children at home and follow: GIS Attendance Policy Related to Illness.

• If you have Covid or flu-like symptoms, please stay home until symptoms have improved and you are fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medications.
• If you test positive with no symptoms, please wear a mask around others while monitoring symptoms
• Masks should also be worn while recovering from illness if mild symptoms persist for the protection of others.
• When students return to school after being out sick, please have them report to the nurses for assessment before returning to class.

We will continue to implement and encourage the following standard precautionary measures on campus to prevent the spread of communicable diseases:

• Promote updated vaccines for flu and Covid-19
• Promote good handwashing and have hand sanitizer readily available
• Encourage mask wearing if exhibiting mild respiratory symptoms without fever
• Encourage social distancing as much as possible
• Maintaining regular cleaning and disinfection of rooms on campus

Every other Tuesday elementary students gather together for a time of worship, fun, and learning more about God from interesting speakers.  Parents are welcome to join us for chapel time.  January chapel days are January 17 & 31 and is from 8:20-9:00 a.m.

We have MANY unclaimed jackets, food containers, water bottles, and school uniforms.  Next time you are on campus, please claim your lost items outside the elementary office. To avoid loss in the future, please label all these things with your family name.  Any items not claimed before Thursday, January 12 will be donated to the GIS Yard Sale.

Once a month elementary shows our Tiger Pride by having a dress-up day. Each month is a different theme but it is always FUN! SPIRITUAL LIFE

Elevation Week starts TODAY (9 January) and runs through Friday, 13 January with special speakers Jack Meckfessel and Madison Stoller. Our theme this year is “Invitation”. Elevation Week is a special annual event hosted by the Spiritual Life Office. This week-long series of gatherings feature worship times, biblical teaching and spiritual experiences to invite students into a deeper walk with Jesus.  See the schedule below or linked here for specific times. 

Important note: 

• Evening gatherings (Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri) from 7:00-8:30pm are optional for our G7-12 students. Parents are welcome to attend evening sessions, but no children/siblings who are younger than Grade 7 may accompany them (no exceptions). Recordings of the teaching times will be made available at a later date.
• Sign up is required to attend The Feast concluding Elevation Week on Friday, 13 Jan. 
  • This meal is for GIS Grade 7-12 students and GIS staff only.
